Jenny Corbett, practicing since 2002:

"I thought it sounded like just about the most awful thing in the world (yoga? BORING! Hot room? MISERY!), but I eventually ran out of excuses. I went to one class and it kicked my butt - but I was hooked immediately. I will practice for the rest of my life. It keeps me centered, balanced, sane."

I have never taken a yoga class before. Which class time should I attend?

How should I prepare for class?
It is best to practice yoga on a fairly empty stomach. Have your last meal about 2-3 hours before your class. Drink plenty of water throughout the day before your class. The more you hydrate before, the better you will feel during your class. Wear clothing that you are comfortable sweating in. For women, we recommend an athletic bra top and athletic shorts. For men, we recommend swim trunks or athletic/biker shorts. Avoid heavy and bulky clothing. Some students also prefer to wear a light t-shirt or tank. Students have barefeet during class.

What should I bring to class?
All students must have a sticky yoga mat and a large bath towel placed over their mat throughout the class. We also recommend bringing in at least one liter of water to drink during class. We have a limited number of mats and towels available for rental and sell water and other beverages. Many students feel more comfortable changing into dry clothes after class, so please bring a plastic bag with you to carry home your wet clothes and towel.

Do you have bathrooms and showers?
Yes. We have restrooms, changing rooms and showers for men and women. Please limit your shower time to a quick rinse and save your "super shower" for home! Please leave your valuables at home or in the car, as we do not have lockers at this time. We are not responsible for your valuables.

How often should I attend class? Do I really need to come three times in my first week?
The more often you attend class, the faster you will see results and the better you will look and feel. When you are first establishing your hot yoga practice, come as often as possible and at least twice within your trial week. By your third class within your trial week, most students find that they have adjusted to the heat, are able to understand the postures and their bodies more, and notice a marked improvement in how they feel. This yoga is therapeutic and cumulative. Results happen quickly when you get off to a strong start. After one month, your body will crave this workout and you will look forward to fitting as many classes as possible into your schedule. Many students practice 4 or 5 times a week or more. You can even do this everyday. Give it a try and be amazed! Within three months you can be transformed.

Why is the room so hot?
The heated room helps to artificially warm up your muscles, allowing for deeper stretching and less chance of injury. It helps improve blood circulation which is a major factor in the yoga healing process. Working in the hot room helps accelerate the rate of change in your body of all the good benefits.

During class I felt light-headed and a little nauseous. Is this normal?
It is actually very normal to feel dizzy, light-headed or nauseous during your first few hot yoga classes. Often new students do not drink enough water prior to class. The more hydrated you are before class, the better you will feel during class. We recommend drinking 2-3 liters to water throughout the day prior to class. It usually takes about three classes for your body to adjust to the heat. Some of the postures we do can also have these effects on your body. Remember, yoga changes how your body functions even after just one class. Sometimes as these changes begin, you will feel uncomfortable. But don't be discouraged. As your body adjusts to these changes and you begin to feel the positive benefits of the yoga, this discomfort will pass and your true happy and healthy self will be revealed.

Why do I feel so tired after class? I thought yoga was supposed to give me more energy.
Before you can reap the benefits of yoga and feel more energized, you must detox your system and start to build strength and endurance. Our classes are challenging no matter what your current physical state. The more you come, the more you will clean out your body from the inside out and the more energized you will feel. As you begin your practice and get the cleansing process started, it is very normal to feel very tired after class. As a beginner, you are only using a few of your muscles to get through the class. As you come more often, you will develop the strength and awareness of all the muscles in your body. Once this happens, you will feel less exhausted and more alive and aware of every part of your body. With regular practice, feeling energized will be your normal state and you will only feel tired and sluggish when you miss classes!
