Body and Soul Connection of Yoga Healing with Lara Rubin Alexiou
Awake 2 Oneness Radio with guest Lara Alexiou Friday September 25, 2015 Live at 7:00 PM EDT. I began practicing Hot Yoga two months ago and met an incredible women, Lara Alexiou. She is the owner of Steamtown Hot Yoga in Scranton, PA. What is so amazing about Lara is she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2003 at the age of 25 and at that time she could barely walk up a flight of stairs. The reason Lara's story resonates so deeply with me is because my daughter was also diagnosed with MS the exact same year when she was only 23 years old.
Lara Rubin Alexiou has been teaching yoga for more than 15 years and has no symptoms of MS. She has trained and has been certified with Bikram, Jimmy Barkan and Zen Wellness in Yoga and Qigong. She is currently completing certification as an Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist through the Himalayan Institute and NAMA...
Here are just a few success stories from people who have improved their lives with Steamtown Hot Yoga!
Hi my name is Andrea. I started coming to SHY a little over a year ago. At first I started doing yoga to lose weight. Within one month I noticed a change. Not only did I lose weight but I also felt happier and less stressed. I now come to SHY almost everyday because I love the way I feel after practicing yoga and I enjoy seeing all the great friends I have made. Recently I went on a retreat with SHY to Costa Rica. It was an amazing experience because not only did I get to do yoga in a beautiful country but I spent a week with great people.
lost a total of 27 pounds, am no longer on steroids and take very few over the counter pain killers. Before yoga, I would take 6 to 8 a day plus steroids to manage the chronic pain and inflammation from arthritic knees and knuckles. I sleep better and have way more energy!
I have been practicing at Steamtown Hot Yoga for approximately three years. My overall experience has been very rewarding. From the time I walk in the door, through my practice, to the time I leave, I am treated with nothing but the utmost kindness and professionalism. During this time, I have benefited physically, mentally and spiritually. The yoga practice has helped me treat a back problem. Most importantly, the practice has been a very important guide in my spiritual journey to oneness. I am very happy that the loving kindness of the teachers and staff at Steamtown Hot Yoga is part of my life.
Steamtown Hot Yoga has helped in so many ways, from weight loss to relaxation to achieving an overall better attitude on my daily life…And the staff is wonderful!
When I was asked to try yoga I was under the assumption that Yoga was for people who did not want any kind of high impact exercise. I thought it was mostly a meditation. I like and need to move. Well, Surprise! It's the hardest and BEST thing I've ever done in my entire life! On that note, my mobility was compromised due to hereditary scoliosis which also causes spinal stynosis, disc degeneration and, a host of other problems in my case. I've had 4 major spine surgeries. One of which has caused me to become even more crooked. I'm very self conscience of the way I look. (except at Steamtown Yoga) Truly the most judgement free place (and people) that anyone will ever meet!!
If you come to classes or plan to, when I arrive and you see me stand in front of the mirror, my ribs clearly are rotated to the left. By the time we are 20 min into it and I have my gaze at my stomach, you seriously can watch how much HOT YOGA straightens me out and increases not only strength but, my flexibility is incredible!! By the end of class I literally am almost an inch taller. Why? Because I'm not crooked by the end of class! Hot Yoga is so amazing and Lara and the teachers are even more amazing! They are going to get sick of me every single class listening to me say that its the BEST thing EVER!!!!!!! You can have the most stressful and miserable day of your life. Walk into Steamtown Yoga. Pounds aren't the only thing to melt away. You won't even remember that you had a bad day. I could go on forever. I love all my teachers! I love how I feel! So thank you Lara! You're the BEST!!! I will forever be grateful you opened your studio.
Steamtown Hot Yoga is awesome. I started a year ago and am 73 years old. You feel amazing mentally, physically and emotionally. When you leave you are energized. I can’t say enough about yoga and you don’t have to feel awkward if you can’t do the poses. The instructors are wonderful and very talented.

I thought I was “too busy” to workout or fit exercise into my hectic schedule. Operating a growing doctor’s office plus doing extensive volunteering, I needed a sanctuary for my mind. I found this in hot yoga. The owners and staff truly care about you and your well-being. You can ask any questions. This is especially helpful for beginners like I was. They will walk you step by step on how to prepare yourself for practice. Now in my 15th month, I can say that no other exercise or activities have brought peace and clarity to my life like Steamtown Hot Yoga. I wholeheartedly recommend this for all ages and all body types too. The classes supports all levels new to advanced. Don’t let fear hold you back; you can do it! Look forward to giving yourself the gift of a clear mind and peaceful soul. You deserve to take time for yourself. I look forward to seeing you in class.
When I started hot yoga, I worried that the heat would be too much for me. The heat was a little hard for the first class or two but then I began to enjoyed the heat. I have Parkinson's and back issues and from the beginning the staff was always helpful in suggesting modifications that allowed me to still try postures without hurting myself. I have found it helps me tremendously with my decreased flexibility and improving my strength overall. The benefits are felt every time I finish a class, I feel energized, relaxed, and mentally and physically refreshed.
Hello my name is Chris, I'm 45 yrs old and I'd like tell my story my starting with one word: FIBROMYALGIA, its just a word right? Wrong! I have been a dairy farmer, mother of 2, student van driver, cookie business at the holidays, and an independent housewife, from hanging from a roof at Christmas, to make the house festive, remodeling two 50+ old farmhouses, painting, wallpapering, lawn maintance, and always my pride, my perinnal flowers. Not to bad, I was proud.
Until an ache started, pain, losing energy, interest in life, always in a fog, getting groceries, left me in the middle of the store in a panic because of the confused, drained feeling, how will I drive home?
After a wonderful new doctor, I was put on Cymbalta, Mirapex, and Clonzepan. Which truly all helped, but once again the feelng, which can be anytime, was like a door was left open and a soft breeze caring pain, floated over me, as the hours wear on, increasing from soft to intense pain, settling in my arms, to legs, to collarbone, back, its choice of course, then when your exhausted enough, the burning sets in, along with the "fibro-fog"!
Is this my life now? NO!!!! I was introduced by a friend to Steamtown Hot Yoga! Of course my body doesn't form a pretzel, and I don't look like a swan as the young yogies do, but with the excellent teaching of the owner, Lara, I have found the limits of my body and can enjoy yoga. Why yoga?
The miracle of hot yoga, has given me my life back from the world of fibro! MANY times I go with extreme effert, and no energy, because I was having another "fibro spell" the only reason to not shrink back into the couch cushions, silently waiting for tomorrow, for it may be without pain, was knowing when I leave yoga, I have NO PAIN, NO FOG!!!! I have my life back!!!! Do I feel 20yrs old again? Of course not, but with Steamtown Hot Yoga, the wonderful instructors, I have taken power over this nightmare.
ALL age groups! ALL shapes and sizes! When your there, your in your own peace of mind, your own space, you don't even realize there is other people in class. Please give it a class or two, and push your way over the life changing nasty word: fibro, to go to a class. Praying it will help, as it has helped me. Sincerely, Chris
Hot Yoga has exceeded any expectations I had about the practice of yoga. I have suffered from chronic back and hip pain for years, and yoga has been my cure. Yoga is my medicine. Not only is it amazing physically, but mentally as well. Two to three times a week is my movement meditation. But most importantly, the owners Lara and Yanni are some of the nicest people I know. Their facility is beautiful and clean, they get to know all of their students personally, and everyone who attends this studio is friendly and kind. Steamtown Hot Yoga is my happy place and my happy hour!
